The increase in the price of oil to 224 lek per liter has prompted the reaction of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, who links the situation to the high level of taxes, beyond international developments.
In a communication with followers on social networks, he acknowledges the impact of the Middle East crisis on energy markets, but emphasizes that growth in Albania is stronger than in other countries, noting that Albania has very high taxes on oil.
"There is no doubt that the movement of oil prices is dictated by the energy crisis created due to the war in the Middle East and the attack on the Gulf countries by Iran. But no other country in the world has such a price increase. Albanians should know that the Albanian government has imposed the highest tax in the world on oil. No other country taxes oil so heavily at a rate of 60 percent of its price. Albania is a record in Europe and the world in oil taxation, which forces companies to maintain stratospheric prices ," he said.
Berisha also focuses on the impact of prices in relation to income, emphasizing that the real burden on citizens is heavier than in other countries.
"But secondly, I want to emphasize that if we do it in proportion to salaries or daily income, Albania results, Albanians result, that they have to pay for the oil they buy 6-8 times more than citizens of other countries in relation to their income. So, oil is a real punishment and this is an inhuman, absurd tax, which Albanian citizens pay every penny," Berisha said.
He also criticizes the measures taken by the government, considering them ineffective and proposing direct tax cuts.
"Edi Rama taxes oil at 1.1 euros per liter, more than any other country in the world, 60 percent of the price. The measures he has announced are ridiculous. They have no and cannot have any impact. The real measures are those announced by Australia and are being announced by other countries. Halving oil taxes. In other words, if Albania receives 1.1 euros per liter of oil, the government should reduce these taxes to a common amount of 0.55 euros per liter of oil," said Berisha.
According to him, the impact of oil prices extends beyond vehicle users and directly affects living costs.
"And those who have less are those who do not have cars because oil directly affects all types of transportation. Oil directly affects the price of bread, the price of food, agricultural products, so it has various impacts and creates more pain for those who do not have cars," the leader of the DP underlined.
Berisha also raises the issue of oil smuggling, accusing it of involvement at government levels and warning of the consequences of state intervention in the market.
"Of course, government smuggling must be fought at all costs because there are at least 350 thousand tons that come on ships without customs clearance, and only the smuggling of ministers and Edi Rama can pass through without customs clearance. The solution that Edi Rama will give is a fraudulent solution because he wants to create a new company of his own, like he created AKSHI, like he created Air Albania, so that he himself will be the main beneficiary," he said.
