DP MP Agron Gjekmarkaj has reacted to the OSCE/ODIHIR report on the May 11 elections.
Gjekmarkaj stressed that Albania cannot be called a democracy as long as the vote is not free. According to him, the shocking findings of the OSCE on the elections refute the claims for free and fair elections.
"The current majority is politically and morally illegitimate. Albania cannot be called a democracy as long as the vote is not free and the state is used against its own citizens."
The shocking findings of the OSCE/ODIHR report on the elections of May 11, 2025, definitively refute any claim of free and fair elections in our country. This international report, drafted by an impartial and highly authoritative organization, constitutes a clear indictment of the Edi Rama regime and the way in which it has destroyed democratic standards in Albania.
The OSCE/ODIHR confirms that the elections were completely dominated by the ruling party, which used the state as an electoral tool rather than a public institution. The state administration was used for campaigning, public resources were systematically misused, and state employees were put under political pressure to support the majority. The free vote was replaced by a vote of fear and submission.
The OSCE/ODIHR report also highlights the total capture of the media, the suppression of pluralism, and the replacement of real information with government propaganda. Instead of a level playing field, citizens were faced with a controlled reality, where every public source, every screen, and every institution was used for the electoral interests of the ruling party.
Another serious concern highlighted by the report is the existence of a patronage system, which constitutes an organized form of political control over Albanian citizens and voters. This phenomenon, considered unacceptable by international standards, shows that Rama's government has set up a mechanism of surveillance and intimidation to manipulate the democratic process.
Even the day of the vote, which the government propaganda called "peaceful", turns out in the report to have been filled with irregularities and serious violations of the law. Local power structures were used to exert influence and control the process at every step.
This OSCE/ODIHR report is the clearest evidence that the May 11 elections were not free, fair and democratic. It confirms that the process took place under the complete domination of the party-state and that the will of the Albanian citizens was distorted through pressure, fear and manipulation.
