Sali Berisha's recent campaign to expel anyone who has been critical from the DP seems to have precipitated a strong conflict.
The clash occurred today at the Democratic Party headquarters, where the leaders of the Kruja and Fushë-Kruja branches met with Secretary General Flamur Noka and demanded clarification on the decision to merge the two branches into one.
According to sources inside the headquarters, the debate immediately escalated. Local leaders opposed the decision and the manner of intervention in their structures, while accusations of unilateral decision-making were leveled against Noka.
Witnesses report a fierce verbal clash, which was only stopped after Sali Berisha intervened. The DP leader entered the meeting to contain the situation and reduce the tension between the parties.
The incident comes as the Democratic Party has begun the process of reorganizing its branches ahead of elections for a new leader, scheduled for May. This process has produced clashes in several areas and opened a debate about the method of selecting leaders.
In Elbasan, where the competition for the leadership of the branch is taking place, five candidates have registered: Lumturi Hasa, Durim Cekrezi, Elior Vila, Sokol Shkëlzeni and Alis Narazani. The process has been accompanied by contests over the membership lists.
Doris Madhi, head of the opposition councilors' group in the Elbasan Municipal Council, declared that she was removed from the list without notice. "Decisions are made arbitrarily and outside of any rules. This process is no longer democratic," she said.
Other names have also been removed from the lists, including Zheni Gjergji, after her appointment as director of the Elbasan Hospital, as well as Alesia Balliu, who has announced her candidacy for president of the Democratic Party against Sali Berisha.
A few days ago, the Democratic Party expelled Dritan Burgija and Arlind Boshku from the group of councilors in the Durrës Municipal Council, after they supported Ervin Salianji's movement.
Developments indicate a reorganization process accompanied by tension and open clashes at several levels of the Democratic Party.
