Christopher Hill, the first American ambassador to Albania, one of the architects of American diplomacy in the Balkans, shared in an interview for the Now show on Euroenews Albania his memories of his mission in our country and the ties he still maintains with Albania.
According to him, Albania is moving in the right direction on the path towards the European Union, but youth emigration is a problem, a phenomenon that, as he said, has not escaped even other countries.
“ Look, every country is going to have its challenges, I’ll be honest with you; the United States of America is also facing a lot of challenges right now. We have to be okay and I assure you and the Albanians that we have to be okay and Albania certainly has challenges, however it is important that when you are climbing this mountain towards membership in the European Union, it is important to look back and see how far you have come, and Albania has come a long way. Of course it had to build institutions, it has had different challenges, however this is not something that foreign diplomats should tell Albania: do this and do that. However I think what I would suggest to the Albanians… the Albanians themselves know, that they are working on all these areas, on all these issues. I think what worries me most in countries like Albania is the size of the population, and the issue that all these countries are suffering from population decline and this "We look at the entire Balkan region and this answers the question of whether young people have this feeling, whether the future is going to be better or not. Of course, telling young people that you have a better future than your grandparents who lived under Enver Hoxha is not enough; they want to see a future that should be in line with young people in other countries in Europe and in the United States of America. So in this regard I think Albania should continue to do what it is doing and I think it is making a lot of progress ," said Ambassador Hill.
