MP Ina Zhupa has condemned the robbery at News 24 as a bandit and illegal act, emphasizing the taking of journalists' personal belongings without any legal basis.
She condemns the violence against journalists and the lack of official documentation by the police during the raid. Zhupa calls this attack a threat to the freedom of the media and the right to information, guaranteed by the Constitution and the European Convention. According to her, the government is trying to silence investigative journalism by seizing the materials of journalists' work.
"The problem was not a building! The problem was to put "guns to the heads" of free speech and journalists, not where they will manufacture weapons! They raid the media without any document and violate journalists who seek to see where this action is based on an official document. This is not a state of law, this is bandit behavior. Scenes that resemble dictatorial republics where "enemies of the people", those disobedient to the party, are attacked at night. Civilians who are raiding the premises of News 24, seizing without any legal right the working materials, computers and documents of journalists are committing a serious violation on political orders.
The request to submit an official letter on the basis of this action was responded to by the state police with violence against the president of the Albanian Journalists Association Isa Myzyraj and journalist Osman Stafa. The seizure of journalists' work materials is unprecedented and illegal! These actions constitute a flagrant violation of media freedom, the right to information and the protection of journalists' confidential sources, principles guaranteed by the Constitution of Albania, the European Convention on Human Rights and the practice of the European Court of Human Rights. For anyone who still had doubts, the arbitrariness of a government that does not care about a building, but cares about silencing journalists, erasing investigative materials from the computers of Klodi Lale, Osman Stafa and all the courageous journalists of this media group is now clearly understood , Zhupa writes.
