Tabaku criticizes the majority: EU integration is not done with "kick and
DP MP, Jorida Tabaku

The new parliamentary session began with the meeting of the Conference of Speakers, during which MP Jorida Tabaku, chairwoman of the Committee on Media and Human Rights, addressed harsh criticism of the majority, accusing it of violating parliamentary rules, excluding the opposition from decision-making, and distorting the European integration process.

In her speech, Tabaku noted that European integration cannot be reduced to a formal and unilateral process, where the opposition is only required to approve laws drafted by the government.

She stressed that the legislative agenda for integration should be shared in advance with the opposition and accompanied by real consultations and parliamentary debate. According to her, in the last session, dozens of laws were submitted for voting in an accelerated procedure, without discussion and outside the normal parliamentary process.

"The regulation cannot be violated for any reason, not even in the name of integration," Tabaku declared.

The Democratic MP also criticized the ongoing violation of the opposition's rights, emphasizing that even the majority's official documents on European integration provide for instruments such as hearings, investigative committees, interpellations and parliamentary questions, which are not implemented in practice.

"These are not political statements, but constitutional rights of the opposition. For four years in a row they have been included in the calendar and have not been implemented," she said, calling the limitation of the role of the opposition and the blocking of parliamentary oversight unacceptable.

Tabaku also focused on the relationship between the Assembly and the judiciary, describing the closure of the previous session as a serious institutional precedent. She mentioned cases where, according to her, the majority has acted as a political shield to prevent the implementation of decisions of judicial institutions, including those of the Constitutional Court.

According to the MP, the closing of the previous session without discussing the mandate of the Deputy Prime Minister is another indicator of the way the socialist majority approaches justice. She demanded that the new parliamentary session begin with the restoration of order through a meeting of the Council for Regulation and Mandates.

Tabaku further emphasized that the government itself is admitting that the country is still far from a real process of European integration. According to her, the opposition's request for additional time, analysis and debate on integration laws does not constitute an obstacle, but a necessity for quality. She warned that the majority's rush to adopt laws without in-depth review has consequences for the budget and Albanian citizens.

The MP underlined that this approach reflects the malfunctioning of the Assembly under the leadership of the socialist majority. According to her, a functional parliament would guarantee regular, transparent and inclusive discussion, while an Assembly that acts as a notary of government decisions violates the public interest.

"European integration is not measured by the number of laws voted on quickly, but by their quality, respect for procedures and the real functioning of parliamentary democracy," Tabaku concluded.
