A former Albanian ambassador to the US says the country's upcoming elections will be more of a showdown between supporters of President Trump and those of George and Alex Soros.
" Albania is now effectively a one-party system that pretends to hold elections ," Agim Nesho, Albania's former ambassador to the United States and the United Nations, told Fox News Digital. Nesho said the May battle "is a clash between the 'Trumpists' and the 'Sorosists,' with the latter fighting to maintain their control over corruption and the state in Albania."
Amid corruption allegations and recent arrests in Albanian politics, some critics are expressing concern about the integrity of the upcoming elections for the country's 140-member Parliament, now scheduled for May 11.
Nesho claimed that the ruling Socialists "led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, are undemocratic and deeply rooted in affairs. According to him, the justice reform has been supported by wealthy left-wing donors such as Alex Soros, Rama's close friend, and by projects such as USAID and the Open Society Foundations. He says that Rama is using the reform against the opposition. He claimed that the prime minister "also oversees a powerful narco-state that spreads fear and exercises control over elections."
President Trump's former campaign manager, Chris LaCivita, joined the campaign of Sali Berisha, the leader of Albania's right-wing Democratic Party, in February, according to Politico. LaCivita told the outlet that Berisha would be "a true friend of the United States and... will work successfully with President Trump and the United States." He called Rama a "puppet of George Soros."
Berisha, a former president and prime minister of Albania, told Fox News Digital that Rama's government "banned my name and the party's name from the voting list" during the May 2023 elections.
Parliament stripped Berisha of his immunity in December 2023 and placed him under house arrest on charges that he used his position to help his son-in-law acquire private land. Berisha says that "official documents proved" that the land belonged to his son-in-law's grandfather and was confiscated by the former communist regime.
Berisha was released from house arrest last November. He was formally charged with corruption in September, the Associated Press reported.
Berisha's spokesman, Alfred Lela, told Fox News Digital that Berisha is now awaiting trial.

Berisha thotë se ai kërkoi tetë vjet më parë që Kongresi i SHBA dhe Parlamenti Evropian "të ndalojnë veprimtarinë politike të [George] Soros në Evropë sepse ai është armik i demokracisë".
Në një fjalim në dhjetor, Berisha tha se do të largonte Soros nga Shqipëria, duke e quajtur grupin një "kërcënim real kombëtar", sipas Euronews Albania. Berisha tha se keqmenaxhimi i burimeve nga qeveria Rama dhe dështimi për të zbutur varfërinë kanë detyruar emigrimin e 45% të shqiptarëve.
Një tjetër pengesë për drejtimin e Berishës janë sanksionet që ish-sekretari i shtetit Antony Blinken shpalli kundër tij, gruas dhe fëmijëve të tij në maj 2021. Blinken tha se Berisha ishte "përfshirë në akte korruptive, të tilla si shpërdorimi i fondeve publike dhe ndërhyrja në proceset publike, duke përfshirë përdorimin e pushtetit të tij për të mirën e tij dhe për të pasuruar aleatët dhe anëtarët e familjes së tij”.
Berisha claimed that the sanctions against him were "based entirely on lobbying" by George Soros and Rama. He also said that members of the Biden administration "turned the US Embassy in Tirana into a large prosecutor's office", urging supporters, journalists and business people to stop supporting Berisha and his party, and that the State Department "asked other countries to sanction and isolate me".
Berisha said the sanctions have hampered his campaign. "Of course it hurts me, because I am not able to meet with the Albanians of America, who are so numerous and in these elections, for the first time, they have the right to vote for the party and candidate they prefer in their country of origin."
A spokesman for former President Joe Biden did not respond to questions about whether his administration had a role in turning supporters against Berisha.
Fox News Digital reached out several times to Albanian Prime Minister Rama, the Soros Foundation, the Albanian Foreign Ministry, and the Albanian Embassy in Washington, D.C., for comment regarding the allegations of corruption and election interference, but received no response. / Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “ Fox News ”
