The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, reacted after the protest held the day before, which was accompanied by tensions and clashes between law enforcement and participants.
He stated that the State Police used violence against protesters and opposition representatives. According to him, stronger than usual means were used during the intervention to disperse the crowds, including a type of spray that, according to his claims, is used on wild animals and constitutes a legal violation.
Berisha described the protest as peaceful and said that Democratic Party leaders and MPs had a role in preserving this character. He accused police leaders of escalating the situation and of planned actions that, according to him, led to clashes.
In his statement, he also mentioned specific cases of opposition MPs who, according to him, have been hit and subjected to selective use of spray. He also raised concerns about the treatment of persons detained in police stations, alleging violence and pressure against them.
His reaction also includes a request for an investigation into police actions and accountability for the use of means that he considers prohibited in interfering with citizens.
"This is the first police force in the world to use bear spray against citizens and protesters. The main leaders of the DP and its MPs Flamur Noka, Luçiano Boçi, Klevis Balliu, Ivi Kaso, Blendi Himçi, Aulon Kalaja and many others have been selectively hit and marked with the spray. On this occasion, I condemn with the utmost force the brutality shown against the demonstrators.
I condemn the torture inflicted on them at the police station. Even today, there are tortured demonstrators at the police station with obvious signs of torture. Aulon Kalaja, after being blinded with bear spray, was hit in a blind revenge with a stick in the back of the head, leaving him unconscious. "So are a series of peaceful demonstrators," said Sali Berisha.
