Today, the President of the Republic of Albania, Bajram Begaj, made a joint visit with the President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, to Hora e Arbëreshëve, in a historic day and event for the Arbëresh community living in the region of Sicily.
After the warm welcome reserved by the residents and the governing authorities, both Presidents, Begaj and Mattarella, visited the Museum of Arbëresh Culture, "MusArb", and the Cathedral of San Demetrio Megalomartire, "Saint Mitri the Great Martyr".
President Begaj expressed his thanks to his Italian counterpart Mattarella and the community of the Sicilian region for this reception, while he shared with those present during the meeting in the theater of the seminar the emotions of his first visit to Piana degli Albanesi.
During his speech, the President of the Republic praised the Arbëresh community as the foundation on which the historical relations between Albania and Italy have been built, while he described the Arbëresh Hora as a treasure that testifies to the strength of culture and the dedication of a people to its roots.
" Arbëresh people are an example that shows that you can proudly preserve traditions and roots, while becoming an active and contributing part of the society where you live. Hora e Arbëreshë, this symbolic city for Arbëresh culture and heritage, is a treasure that testifies to the strength of culture and the dedication of a people to its roots ", said President Begaj.
The Head of State honored the important figures of the Arberes of Sicily over the centuries for their contribution to the National Renaissance, the efforts for independence and the movements for the unification of Italy.
President Begaj appreciated the continuation of the efforts of the people of Arbëresh even today as an important part of the friendship between Albania and Italy, helping our countries to always remain connected.
"The friendship between Albania and Italy is more than a diplomatic relationship, it is a deep, common and very stable bond. These relationships have a depth of cooperation that guarantees stability, predictability and sustainable development. Cooperation extends to all areas of political, economic, social and cultural activity, security and defense as member countries in NATO and, above all, contacts and friendship between ordinary people ", said the President of the Republic.
Begaj conveyed to the Italian President Mattarella a special gratitude for his dedication in supporting Albania, while he advised the Arbër community to continue in the footsteps of their fathers to preserve and promote the language and traditions, as he added that caring for the Arbër is everyone's duty.
" We must work together to create opportunities for the people of Arbëresh to continue to live and work well, preserving their traditions, but also benefiting from modernity and development, " Begaj emphasized, among other things.
