The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, delivered her speech during the joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz within the framework of the Berlin Process Summit in Tirana.
In a press conference for journalists, Von der Leyen and Scholz were asked if 2030 will be the year in which the countries of the Western Balkans will join the European Union?
Von der Leyen said that work is being done on the report that is published every year for EU aspirant countries, but it is up to the latter to decide. She also said that the countries of the Western Balkans should make a clear choice whether they are with the European Union or with Russia, since according to her, the war in Ukraine has already changed everything.
"We are working on the report that is published every year for the aspirant countries that will join the European Union. It is the European Union that will decide. The war between Ukraine and Russia changed everything, these countries now have to decide they can no longer be between the European Union and Russia, they have to make a choice. They should also continue with the required reforms. For me, it is important to "do our homework" and seize and use this historical moment", said Ursula Von der Leyen.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Scholz said that in these 20 years something more should have been done for the Western Balkans, adding that the "European dream" of these countries can only be achieved by working hard.
"I think it is a mistake that after we met in Thessaloniki almost 20 years ago, something more has not been done in the Western Balkans. We have to work harder, as we all have the same view.
We must work hard to achieve this, but also the aspiring countries must take the right steps to make this possible. There is a European dream in these countries, but you have to work harder. You have waited a long time, but it is now time for us all to work together," said the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz.
