The two EU leaders were firm in their positions regarding Charles Michel's statement that the Balkans should be in the EU by 2030. Both said that it is the reforms that can bring membership and nothing else. According to them, the reforms are different for each country.
" It is the reforms of the frameworks that have been built on the basis of the states, the constitutional and integration reforms that will be taken into account. It takes a lot of work to realize them. These are based on the cooperation criterion which is very important.
I am convinced that it is a mistake that after we met in Thessaloniki 20 years ago, the Western Balkans have not joined the European Union. The membership of the countries of the Western Balkans should have already been done, and we are very committed to making the membership of the countries of the Western Balkans possible. It's all based on merit. They must take the necessary steps. My point of view is that the membership of the Western Balkan countries should be done as soon as possible. If it gives you a dream, Europe must work hard to achieve this goal ," said the German chancellor.
Von Der Leyen was on the same line. She said that all countries aiming for membership should do their homework.
" As for the year 2030, there cannot be an exact, definite date, regardless of reformation or not. This will never be acceptable to member countries, but you have to wait until a certain date. 2030 means the next mandate not acceptance, the common methodology that we have accepted with the European Council, is a meritorious process and it is more beneficial for the countries as well, because it is their efforts and successes that move them forward and also to push them forward to take the necessary steps. It is merit based. If you undertake the reform, you will receive funding and funding. It is a very precise process and this is the methodology we have accepted ", she emphasized.
The head of the EC said that the people of the Western Balkans should open up to each other and if you want access to the European Union you should be on the same level.
