Electoral reform is an essential process for improving elections. This was stated by the OSCE Ambassador in Tirana, Michel Tarran, who has given his support to the Special Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform. Tarran has called for an acceleration of the commission's work to address all the problems.
He asked Albanian lawmakers to resolve issues related to the elections, while bringing to attention the ongoing recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR after every process that takes place in Albania.
"We hope that the commission will resume work as soon as possible, as what it is doing is extremely important. There are several issues in the electoral law that need to be improved and this is a recommendation that is made every time by the ODIHR mission," the ambassador said.
He appreciated the fact that all political actors in the country have agreed on the need for electoral reform.
"This time I have the impression that the ODIHR message has been taken seriously. Political parties, despite their differences, agree that this reform is necessary and we will help improve it," Tarran declared.
The Electoral Reform is considered one of the two most important reforms expected to be approved by the Albanian Parliament. The Territorial Reform must be concluded within this parliamentary session so that the 2027 local elections can be held with the new territorial division. Meanwhile, for the electoral reform, lawmakers have more time available, although they aim to conclude them within this year.
