Today marks 7 years since the Kosovo Parliament adopted laws that changed the mandate of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF), giving it the function of a regular state army. The historic decision was made on December 14, 2018, with 106 votes in favor and only one abstention, while Serbian MPs boycotted the session, openly opposing the formation of the Kosovo Army.
The name of the KSF was not changed, but its content and powers were fundamentally transformed in line with the standards of modern armies. The laws were amended and voted on one by one, in a charged political atmosphere, but with broad international support, especially from the United States of America.
On this occasion, Ramush Haradinaj, who at the time was leading the government, commemorated the anniversary by describing the formation of the Army as one of the most important state-building decisions of the post-war period. “ We came in peace, in line with the armies of peace. Seven years of courage, seven years of pride, seven years of the Kosovo Army by our side ,” he wrote.
Haradinaj underlined that the Kosovo Army was born from the sacrifice of the liberation war, from the blood of martyrs and from the legacy of those who left behind freedom and the obligation to defend it. He stressed that the 2018 decision was taken with the blessing of the US, as an inevitable step towards strengthening the country's security and sovereignty.
" Today we have an army. Today we have a safer state. Today we have a stronger Kosovo ," said Haradinaj, considering this transformation as a fulfillment of national responsibilities and as a guarantee for the country's future.
The Kosovo Army, although still in its development phase, has been trained and equipped in cooperation with international partners, while gaining respect and trust for its discipline and role in guaranteeing stability in the region.
