Alert in Kosovo, the first case of African swine fever is confirmed

The first case of African swine fever in Kosovo has been confirmed. The Food and Veterinary Agency of Kosovo (AUV) says that it has taken all measures to prevent the further spread of African swine fever.

The first case in Kosovo was confirmed on July 17 in a pig farm in the municipality of Kllokot, the southwestern part of the country.

The spokesperson of AUV, Lamir Thaçi, says that this, at the same time, is the first confirmed case of this disease in the history of Kosovo.

African swine fever is a contagious viral disease that causes hemorrhagic fever in domestic and wild pigs.

According to the scientific findings so far, the disease is not transmitted to humans or other animals.

Thaçi says that all the infected pigs on the farm in Kllokot have been destroyed. According to him, there were 22 pigs, five of which were dead.

Thaçi says that AUV officials then destroyed all the animals on the farm, after the Food and Veterinary Laboratory confirmed the presence of African swine fever in it.

He adds that according to the law, it is required that all pigs present on the farm be destroyed, in order to prevent the spread of the disease.

In order to prevent the spread of the disease, the AUV has created a crisis headquarters, he says, while also starting the epidemiological research of the pig farms located in the perimeter of three kilometers from the farm with infected pigs.

Thaçi adds that the slaughter of animals that show any clinical signs of the disease in question is prohibited.

Symptoms of African swine fever include: fever, lack of appetite, red skin, diarrhea and vomiting.

Thaçi, from AUV, announces that the number of pig farms in Kosovo is 5,242. Most of them are located in the region of Mitrovica, Gjilan, Peja and Gjakova.

Data from the Statistics Agency of Kosovo show that over 47,000 pigs live in the country, accounting for 8.6 percent of the total number of animals.

Economic loss

Kurtesh Sherifi, lecturer of the Viral Infectious Disease in Animals course at the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Pristina, says that the African swine fever does not endanger public health, but has an impact only in the economic aspect, due to the death or destruction of infected pigs .

"There is no danger to humans. The problem lies in economic losses. Almost a part of the European countries are affected by the African swine fever and they are afraid that their economy will be damaged, the farmer will be damaged... and they have financial obligations in the control of the disease", says Sherifi .

He adds that the isolation and destruction of pigs infected with African plague are some of the measures that prevent the spread of the disease.
