The peacekeeping forces in Kosovo seem to have come to the "tip of the nose" with the tensions in the north. KFOR has been put on alert and has increased its military forces, while increasing calls for calm.
The commander of KFOR, Angelo Michele Ristuccia, spoke in an interview for "Corriere della Sera", stating that Prime Minister Albin Kurti acted unilaterally with the appointment of new Albanian mayors in the three municipalities in the north.
" The decision of the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to appoint mayors of municipalities with ethnic Albanian affiliation unknown by the Serbian majority, was made without taking into account the advice of the international community. The government's second unilateral action was to use force without consulting us, thus necessitating our intervention to avert a tragedy ," he said.
Ristuccia added that now coordination is needed. According to him, the harmful consequences of these types of actions should be assessed. He further added that Kosovo in the north, without the NATO mission, would be "another hotbed of war".
" The situation we are facing is the result of a series of crises accumulated over time. Let's call it a controlled instability, which, however, is becoming more and more unstable on the ground, due to the fragility of the relations between the two ethnic groups and whoever represents them", he said .
The commander of KFOR, speaking for the Italian newspaper, emphasized that both sides are responsible for the situation created. According to him, conflicting rhetoric should end.
" Both sides are unable to benefit from the objectives achieved over the years, with great efforts by international diplomacy. This environment is saturated with absolutely unproductive and dangerous rhetoric, completely dysfunctional towards the objectives of peace that the international community wants to achieve in Kosovo ", he said.
