The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo has asked the government of Kosovo to remove measures for imports from Serbia, as according to it, such a decision is also affecting imports from American-owned companies.
On June 15, after Serbian forces arrested three Kosovo policemen, the Government in Pristina banned almost all imports from Serbia. The policemen were then released, but the Kosovar executive kept the ban on imports in force.
According to OEAK, this decision has caused imports from American-owned companies to fall by more than 39 percent, compared to the previous year, adding that imports related to American companies are decreasing "at an alarming rate".
"The ban, which targets Serbia and the products imported from this country, actually affects international companies to a great extent. Many of these businesses are owned by companies from partner countries, including the United States of America, which have been key pillars in supporting Kosovo's growth trajectory," said a media release from the American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo.
"Good neighborly relations are the main prerequisite for the Euro-Atlantic integration of Kosovo. The current measures, unfortunately, are contrary to the calls of Kosovo's international allies, who call for harmonious regional relations. Therefore, the American Chamber emphasizes that economic normalization between Kosovo and Serbia transcends bilateral interests. It is an essential strategy for cementing regional stability and advancing the ambitions of European integration," the announcement said./REL
