The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office filed an indictment on Friday against a man, whom it accuses of having spied for the Serbian Intelligence and Security Agency, known as BIA, for an indefinite period of time.
Prosecutors accuse the suspect, identified only by the initials AV, of two criminal offenses, espionage and illegal possession of weapons.
According to the indictment, the suspect had "collected important data and documents, which he then sent in his capacity as a Resident Agent to the Serbian BIA", thereby "violating the constitutional order and security of Kosovo as well as the lives of state officials and its citizens".
He is suspected of having committed the crime for an indefinite period of time until his arrest in June 2024.
"From the evidence obtained... AV had created a network of employees of Serbian nationality in international organizations in Kosovo, from whom he had received information and reports on the work of these organizations related to political and security aspects in Kosovo, and had also collected information on persons of Serbian nationality, with the aim of presenting them as collaborators of Kosovo's security structures," the indictment states.
He is suspected of having "delivered the obtained data and documents to the senior BIA official, RG, head of one of the BIA Centers on the territory of Serbia, through telephone communications and physical meetings."
The prosecution said that a gun and a tear gas canister were found and confiscated in the suspect's home during a police raid.
Prosecutors have requested that he be held in custody pending trial. The prosecution did not provide further details about AV's identity or nationality, but in recent years Serbs and Albanians have been arrested in Kosovo on suspicion of spying for Serbia's intelligence services.
As cases increase, security experts say that Serbian intelligence has spread its roots throughout the territory of Kosovo over the years. /REL
