The head of European Union diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, at the end of her visit to Kosovo on Friday, also visited North Mitrovica, where she stopped at the EULEX office and met with representatives of the education and justice system.
In a brief statement to the media in North Mitrovica, Kallas said that it was important to go to the northern part of Kosovo because "different narratives are heard there."
"It is important to see for ourselves what is happening on the ground and what people are saying. I visited the functioning courthouse that is awaiting the return of Serbian judges. I also met with representatives of schools here to better understand the situation, to talk to citizens and to see with my own eyes what is happening in this area," she stated.
Hundreds of members of the Serb community in the north resigned from Kosovo institutions, including municipalities, police, courts, and the prosecution, in November 2022, following a decision by the Kosovo Government to replace Serbian car license plates with Kosovo license plates.
Since then, the mayors of the municipalities of Mitrovica North, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavić have been replaced with Albanian leaders, after the majority Serb community in the area boycotted the elections.
In the courts, the prosecutor's office, and the police, the Serbian employees never returned.
In an Instagram post, accompanied by a video from the court meeting, Kallas wrote that the European Union remains of the opinion that "the return of Kosovo Serb judges, prosecutors and staff is essential for justice, stability and multi-ethnic coexistence."
In North Mitrovica, Kallas also added that international forces provide a clear and realistic picture of the situation on the ground, about which “one side says one thing, while the other side says something else.”
"It is essential to talk to people on the ground to see what more we can do to make the future safe and prosperous for everyone in Kosovo," she concluded./ REL
