The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) has published an article about the latest decision on the property issue of the Monastery of Deçan.

FAZ writes that in a conflict that lasted for more than a decade over the property of a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Kosovo, the Government of Kosovo intervened in favor of the monks.

"At the center of this conflict were 24 hectares of forest and agricultural land near the Monastery of Deçan in western Kosovo. The lands belonged to the Monastery according to several decisions of the Kosovar high courts of justice. But, although the Supreme Court (2009) and the Constitutional Court (2016) had confirmed the Monastery's claim to the land, the Cadastre Office refused to register the land in favor of the church for political reasons," writes the German daily.

According to FAZ, disregarding the decision of the Constitutional Court during these years has hindered the chances of the success of Kosovo's application for membership in the Council of Europe, which it had submitted in May 2022, Telegrafi reports.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo informed the Council of Europe that the Cadastre Office, with the instructions of the government, had registered the land in favor of the monastery.

FAZ writes that at the same time, the General Consulate of Kosovo in Strasbourg sent a copy of the new cadastral certificates to the Council of Europe.

"It is expected that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will now vote for the admission of Kosovo to the Council of Europe. If this happens, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe can take the final decision on the admission", writes the German newspaper.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, made it clear on Wednesday that without the intervention in favor of the monastery, Kosovo's path to become part of the Council of Europe would have been blocked, even though he still considers the decision of the Constitutional Court as " strange and unjustifiable"./  Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)
