
A serious incident shook the city of Lipjan in Kosovo on Monday evening, where a 27-year-old man lost his life while being escorted by the Police.
Five police officers were arrested as suspects in the death of the young man, Agron Zejnullahu, who passed away in the early hours of July 7, on "Haradin Bajrami" Street.
Suspicions have been raised regarding the incident, while police officers were suspended from duty after being accused of "negligent homicide."
According to the Kosovo Police, the incident occurred around 00:15, when Zejnullahu was suspected of attacking passersby with a car on "Haradin Bajrami" street in Lipjan.
After citizens called, police officers intervened to arrest him and handcuff him. According to police, the 27-year-old died at the scene.
Immediately after the event, the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (IPK) launched investigations and suggested the suspension of five police officers.
IPK has announced that security cameras and the testimonies of those present are being examined to clarify the circumstances of the death.
Meanwhile, the victim's family members have raised suspicions of excessive use of force by the police. The deceased's brother, Alban Zejnullahu, has stated in the media that his brother was killed by the hand of the state, demanding justice and a full investigation into the case.
"There were marks on his face as if he had been beaten massively, on his body...", he said.
According to the deceased's brother, they heard versions about the 27-year-old's death such as "heart attack and alcohol-induced...", but he states that "it is clear that he was killed by the hand of the state, by some police officers...".
Meanwhile, one of the emergency doctors who was at the scene of the incident recounted shocking details to the media.
"Last night we received a call from the police station, it was 12 after midnight. They told us that there were several drunk people. When we arrived, we saw that one of them was lifeless, lying next to a police officer. He was still handcuffed. We asked for the handcuffs to be removed because he was unconscious, but first aid was unsuccessful. We notified the police that forensics should be called ," she said.
According to her, the medical staff was not informed that this was a person in serious condition or without signs of life.
The case has caused widespread public reaction. It is expected that the autopsy report will shed light on the true causes of the 27-year-old's death.
