The European Union has asked Kosovo to postpone the entry into force of the decision to ban the circulation of the Serbian dinar in the country, as it may complicate the lives of the Serbian community there.
"The European Union is concerned about the consequences that this decision may have on the daily lives of Kosovo Serbs and other communities due to the lack of prior consultation, especially about the impact it will have on schools and hospitals, seeing that for at the moment there are no alternatives", says the EU's official response.
"The short transition period for the implementation of this decision, combined with the fact that there was a lack of information and practical solutions for the affected communities, risks seriously complicating their lives. The EU calls on Kosovo to ensure that the transition period is long enough and to find a negotiated solution to this issue, within the framework of the dialogue mediated by the EU".
The EU acknowledges that this decision aims to increase financial transparency in the country and fight money laundering, and adds that it will also affect the financial support that Kosovo Serbs receive from Serbia.
