Kosovars with debts up to their throats, about 5 billion euros in loans

The number of citizens who received loans through the commercial banks of Kosovo has increased by about 13 thousand until November 2023, compared to the same period of the previous year. Nearly 200,000 citizens have turned to Kosovo's banks for loans this year.

Meanwhile, the total amount of loans in the banking sector until October is about 5 billion euros. In addition, the average interest rate of 2% has also increased.

Interest rates have increased and are not favorable, because of the standard of living they have, citizens are forced to go into debt.

Hysni Thaçi said that his family members have taken loans, as they have experienced economic difficulties.

While Sabri Rexha calls the interest rate "usury". According to him, apart from the need, "people have an expression that they cannot live without debt".

Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) said that the total number of loan recipients is 118,102 until November, about 13 thousand more than last year.

CBK emphasizes that the total amount of loans in the banking sector until October of this year is 4.8 billion euros.

According to the bank, the average interest rate for new loans in October 2023 is estimated at 6.4%, which in the same period last year was estimated at 6.2%.

Also, the Association of Banks of Kosovo confirms that the value of new loans reported up to September 2023 has increased by more than 1 billion euros, compared to the same period last year. They add that this value is 8.91% higher than in 2022.

Meanwhile, the founder of the Research Institute for Economy and Finance, Fehmi Mehmeti, says that the increase in lending continues to be high, especially after the pandemic. Mehmeti evaluates this increase as good, since according to him it affects the economic development of the country.

In addition, the former governor of CBK said that the pandemic has also influenced the increase in inflation. He underlined that after the decision of the European Central Bank to increase the interest rate for four consecutive times, the American Federal Reserve System also acted in the same way, which according to him is known that this would affect the increase in inflation in the whole of Europe, therefore also in Kosovo.

Mehmeti says that he expects that there will be a decrease in inflation.

In addition to the increase in loans, deposits have also reached the value of 5 billion and 875.9 million euros.

Meanwhile, commercial banks in Kosovo have managed to ensure high profit during the period January-October 2023.

According to the latest report of the Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK), for ten months of this year from bank loans and other services, commercial banks had a net profit of 141 million euros or about 20 million euros more than in the same period of the year passed. /KosovaPress
