The US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, was in Dubrovnik a day ago where he commented on the situation between Kosovo and Serbia.
Escobar, in a press conference commenting on the situation in Kosovo, emphasized that the best solution for exiting the crisis is for Belgrade and Pristina to accept the three-point plan presented by the European Union.
" We have positive indications that the Serbian president, Aleksandër Vucic, is ready to accept it, but the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, needs to be convinced a little more. We hope that Kurti will at some point fulfill the European and American requirements ", said Escobar, reports Vijesti .
Asked about the consequences that may come to Kosovo and Serbia if they do not meet the demands of the international community to expand the situation in the north of Kosovo, Escobar said that both countries will lose many opportunities.
" The consequences are not punitive measures, but they are lost opportunities for both countries if they reject the proposal for exiting the crisis ", said Escobar, explaining that for Kosovo this means distancing from international partners, while for Serbia not advancing towards the road to the European Union.
Regarding the situation created by Kurti's government, Escobar said that the US partnership with Kosovo is with the people and not with any party or main figure.
" Our partnership with Kosovo is a partnership with the people of Kosovo, not with a party or a political figure ", said the American envoy for the Western Balkans.
We recall that Serbia and Kosovo in February accepted the European plan for the normalization of relations and in March in Ohrid the Annex for the implementation of that agreement.
The text of the agreement states that both parties will develop "normal, good-neighborly relations based on equal rights", that "they will mutually recognize national documents and symbols, including passports, diplomas, license plates and customs stamps " and that Serbia will not oppose Kosovo's membership in any international organization. But the riots in the north of Kosovo at the end of May are threatening the plan.
