Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has reacted to the request of the Special Prosecution Office in The Hague, which has requested a total of 180 years in prison for the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, respectively 45 years in prison for each.
In a lengthy response, Kurti emphasized that the Kosovo Liberation Army's war was a just fight for survival and dignity, strongly opposing efforts to detach it from the historical and political context of the time.
" The moral and historical essence of our liberation war consists in the survival and dignity of the people. The KLA was the bearer of a just, protective and defensive war. It took place in circumstances of brutal occupation when the violence of apartheid was turning into state genocide ," Kurti declares.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo has warned that any attempt to treat individual actions outside of this context risks, according to him, distorting historical truth.
" Any attempt to detach individual actions from this historical and political context risks distorting the truth and meaning of that war ," he says.
Referring directly to the Special Prosecution's request, Kurti stated that the KLA never had the intention of exterminating any other people or civilians and that the requested sentences are not based on accepted international standards.
" We have never had a plan to exterminate any other people or civilians. Today's request by the Prosecution in The Hague for a sentence of 45 years in prison for each of the accused KLA leaders is not based on any internationally accepted standard of sentencing ," Kurti continues.
According to him, this request ignores the reality of the war in Kosovo and attempts to address the issue outside of any historical and legal context.
" It completely ignores the context of the war in Kosovo and attempts to place this issue in a legal vacuum, detaching the actions from the reality of a liberation war ," the prime minister added.
At the end of the reaction, Kurti reiterated Kosovo's institutional stance in defense of the KLA war and the values on which the state was built.
" The Republic of Kosovo remains steadfast in its belief that the KLA waged a just war and anti-colonial uprising. Kosovo's institutions will continue to defend the factual and historical truth, the value and dignity of the struggle for freedom, as well as the fundamental principles of justice, opposing any attempt to distort them ," Kurti concluded.
