Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has reacted to the Special Prosecution's request to sentence each of the 4 KLA leaders to 45 years in prison.
Osmani states that Kosovo's independence was the result of the will of the people and a century-long sacrifice, recalling the contribution of the Kosovo Liberation Army and the numerous victims during the war.
In a Facebook post, Osmani stated that thousands of martyrs and innocent civilians gave their lives for the freedom of Kosovo, while the KLA fought heroically.
" Kosovo's independence was the will of the people of Kosovo. It was a centuries-old sacrifice for which thousands of martyrs and innocent civilians gave their lives and for which the Kosovo Liberation Army fought, with heroism and pure warfare ," Osmani wrote.
The President emphasized that Serbia committed serious crimes during the war in Kosovo, which she described as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
" During the last war in Kosovo, Serbia aimed to exterminate the Albanian people, a goal it manifested through the murder and massacre of thousands of children, women, men and the elderly, rape, the destruction of hundreds of thousands of homes and the expulsion of over 80 percent of citizens from their homes ," she emphasized.
Osmani has also criticized efforts to equate the KLA's liberation war with crimes committed by Serbia, warning that these efforts harm justice and long-term peace.
" Any attempt to equate the KLA's liberation war with the crimes of the Serbian genocidal aggressor undermines faith in justice and seriously damages long-term peace ," the president wrote.
Finally, Osmani reiterated the demand for justice and the importance of preserving historical truth, underlining that the KLA's war was just and pure and that this truth cannot be changed by attempts to rewrite history.
