The former American prosecutor Kimberly West is known to be the new chief prosecutor in the Specialized Chambers in The Hague dealing with war crimes in Kosovo.
According to the 'Voice of America', West will replace former Attorney General Jack Smith, who in November 2022 was appointed special prosecutor for the investigations against former US President Donald Trump.
Kimberly West has worked as a prosecutor for more than two decades in the US, while from 2008 to 2013 she worked at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, as a member of the team that prosecuted the former leader of the Serbian Bosnian Radovan Karadzic, for his role in the genocide in Srebrenica. She was also on the team of prosecutors handling crimes committed in Mostar, Bosnia by Croat forces.
In December of last year, the Court sentenced the former member of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Sali Mustafa, to 26 years in prison on charges of murder and torture in a detention center during the war in Kosovo.
At the beginning of April, the trial began against the former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, and three former senior political officials, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi, all former senior leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, under the charges for war crimes yesterday crimes against humanity. They are accused of persecution, imprisonment, other inhumane acts, torture, murder and forced disappearance of persons.
