NN (identity known to the editors of Radio Evropa e Lire) is one of the 46 members of the Serbian community who joined the Kosovo Police, after the competition to fill vacant positions in the directorate for the northern region of Kosovo.
In total, about 74 of them from the ranks of non-majority communities have started work this week.
" After the training, we were deployed to the north of Kosovo, where I go every day from Monday with my colleagues ," he says.
NN is from one of six Serb-majority municipalities south of the Ibar and agreed to speak to Radio Free Europe on condition of anonymity because "it's not easy to work in the north."
" When I applied to the police, I was aware of the danger that it carries, especially since it is the north, we all know how the current situation is ", he continues.
In the north of Kosovo, there are four municipalities with a Serbian majority - North Mitrovica, Leposaviqi, Zveçani and Zubin Potok - where tensions have increased since the end of May after the Albanian mayors came to power.
This, as well as previous crises in the north, was preceded by the resignation of Serbs from Kosovo institutions in November last year, including police officers. The reason was the decision of the Government of Kosovo to remove from use the license plates of vehicles, which are issued by the Serbian authorities for the cities of Kosovo.
Thus, all the time in the north, mainly Albanian policemen were present. Meanwhile, the competition for the recruitment of new policemen from the ranks of non-majority communities in Kosovo has been announced twice.
Kosovo officials and foreign diplomats especially encouraged Serbs to apply to these competitions.
Until now, four Serbs worked at the police station for the northern region, who did not resign, the deputy director of the Kosovo Police for the north, Veton Elshani, told REL.
" Now we have 78 policemen, 50 of whom are Serbs ," he said.
The interlocutor of REL emphasizes that the work in the Kosovo Police is very important for him, especially after many years of searching for a job with a "safe salary".
" This (job) means a kind of security for me, at least when it comes to economic security ," he says.
He adds that even earlier he applied for a job in the Kosovo Police, but also in other institutions. However, so far he has had no success.
" Wherever I applied, I didn't find a job... I really needed this job because of family obligations ," he says.
He adds that so far he has not faced any pressure or threats.
But on July 25, a post with photos of Serbs who joined the Kosovo Police began to circulate on Telegram channels.

Kryeministri i Kosovës, Albin Kurti, tha të mërkurën se fushata kundër policëve serbë në rrjetet sociale, e cila synon t'i frikësojë dhe kërcënojë ata, është e papranueshme për Qeverinë e Kosovës.
“Ata sot janë pjestarë të Policisë së Kosovës, sepse janë profesionistë të guximshëm, sepse janë qytetarë që kanë dashuri për vendin dhe e shprehin këtë duke i kontribuar atij”.
“Ata që integrohen jetojnë më mirë, ata që nuk integrohen, fatëkeqësisht, mbeten peng e subjekt i trysnisë financiare, dhe keqpërdorimit politik nga Beogradi zyrtar”, theksoi Kurti.
Ai tha se institucionet e sigurisë do t'u ofrojnë mbështetje të plotë policëve të rinj.
Kërcënimet i dënoi edhe presidentja e Kosovës, Vjosa Osmani.
"Kjo fushatë duhet të ndalet dhe autorët të dalin para drejtësisë. Ne qëndrojmë pranë policëve tanë, ndërsa ata shërbejnë me guxim për një ambient më të sigurt për të gjithë", tha presidentja Osmani.
Diplomatët e huaj në Kosovë reaguan dhe dënuan të gjitha kërcënimet ndaj policëve të rinj të Kosovës nga komunitetet joshumicë.
“Çdo lloj frikësimi është i papranueshëm dhe theksoj rëndësinë e Policisë së Kosovës në përfaqësimin e të gjithë qytetarëve të Kosovës”, ka shkruar në llogarinë e tij në Twitter shefi i Misionit të BE-së për Sundimin e Ligjit – EULEX.
Edhe ambasadori i SHBA-së në Kosovë, Jeffrey Hovenier, tha se Policia e Kosovës ekziston për t'u shërbyer të gjitha komuniteteve në Kosovë dhe se ajo duhet të pasqyrojë diversitetin e Kosovës.
Ambasadori gjerman në Kosovë Jorn Rohde shtoi se policët e rinj të Kosovës nga komunitetet joshumicë duhet të kenë mbështetjen e të gjithëve, veçanërisht të komunave dhe qytetarëve ku janë caktuar.
Zëvendësdrejtori i Policisë së Kosovës për rajonin e veriut, Veton Elshani, tha për Radion Evropa e Lirë se deri më tani asnjë polic i ri nuk është përballur me ndonjë problem apo provokim, duke shtuar se institucionet janë të gatshme të reagojnë nëse ndodh një gjë e tillë.
"Do ta përballojmë, por disa gjëra vijnë me pozitën. Kur je polic duhet të parashikohen disa gjëra, mendoj se e dinë”, thotë Elshani.
Nga ana tjetër, politologu Ognjen Gogiq beson se Kosova mund t'i mbrojë policët e rinj në veri vetëm me ndihmën e njësisë speciale. Sipas tij, kjo do të ishte një “situatë absurde”.
" That the Albanian special forces protect the Serbian policemen from the local Serbian population. If this were to happen, if they (Kosovo institutions) had to protect the regular police with special units, then we are on the verge of a new escalation ", he says for REL.
Gogic believes that before new Serbian police officers are deployed in the north, a political agreement between Kosovo and Serbia should have been reached.
However, he concludes that the arrival of the regular police in the north creates the possibility of withdrawing the special unit and that such a thing could lead to a "relaxation of the situation".
The withdrawal of Kosovo's special forces from the north is also demanded by the local Serbian population, as well as the largest party of Kosovo Serbs, which has the support of Belgrade - Lista Serbe. /REL
