Trial in The Hague, Prosecutor Lawson: Thaçi had clear intentions, KLA
Hashim Thaçi in The Hague

Today, February 9, the final phase of the trial against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) has begun.

At the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi will speak before the black platoons regarding charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the period 1998-1999.

Prosecutor Clare Lawson says KLA members have remained silent in the face of 'war crimes'.

"The detainees were brutally beaten, including by Rexhep Selimi, while 11 detainees died. Thaçi had clear intentions. Thaçi, accompanied by Selimi, presented the plan for the interim government to UNMIK," she said.

According to her, former President Thaçi was trying to do things that were not his responsibility.

The prosecutor said that the KLA continued to "target civilians" even after the Kumanovo Agreement was signed, detaining civilians under suspicion of collaboration.

According to her, after the Kumanovo Agreement, the KLA took control of state infrastructure and the defendants attempted to establish de facto authority on the ground. She cited a June 1999 communiqué stating that three people had been detained, two of whom had been killed and one had escaped. Lawson alleged that Thaçi was attempting to consolidate power in the international arena, denying that any criminal acts had been committed.

Meanwhile, the Hague Prosecutor's Office has made a clarification, saying that the special prosecutor's words were poorly translated into Albanian.

According to the Prosecutor's Office in The Hague, the prosecutor has requested 45 years in prison for each former KLA commander. So, a total of 180 years in prison have been requested. This was announced by the court's spokesman Christopher Bennet for Rel.
