The state of Serbia continues to be a haven for persons wanted for various criminal offenses by Kosovo institutions. According to legal experts, international pressure is needed to change this approach.
There are 6 border crossing points with Serbia.
But the nearly 400-kilometer dividing line between the two states makes full control, and consequently illegal crossings, difficult.
And this has not been left unexploited over the years by persons wanted by justice in Kosovo.
There are currently several people on the run from Kosovo, including those wanted by international arrest warrants.
And one place where they may be hiding is believed to be Serbia, since this country does not have any kind of legal cooperation with Kosovo.
"They often take advantage of the opportunity at the border with Serbia to cross into Serbia, since Kosovo does not have bilateral relations with Serbia, they have not notified us and we have not notified them, so it is difficult to extradite such persons with countries that do not have bilateral relations. I do not believe that Serbia would take such a step to extradite such persons," said Refki Morina - former head of serious crimes in the Police.
According to the Kosovo Justice Institute, there should be international pressure to prevent Serbia from becoming a haven for criminals wanted by Kosovo institutions.
"This situation is not something that is happening recently, but it has been happening since 1999 and with particular emphasis after the declaration of independence of Kosovo in 2008. IKL has continuously emphasized that the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo should have close relations with internationals so that Kosovo's demands are somehow heard and I ask Serbia to stop this approach," said Ehat Miftaraj, director of IKL.
The Kosovo Police has not indicated the number of people currently being sought, saying that we should refer to the posts that this institution publishes on Facebook and on their website.
Meanwhile, since May 2024, Enver Sekiraqa, convicted by the first instance to 25 years in prison for inciting the murder of police officer Triumf Riza, has been wanted by the justice authorities.
Marko Rosic, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for involvement in the murder of Serbian politician Oliver Ivanovic, also continues to be inaccessible to the justice system.
Recently, the Kosovo Police has issued an arrest warrant for Mefail Shkodra and his two sons, Edonis and Engjull Shkodra, suspected of the triple murder in Gjilan.
Xhemajl Nuhiu is also being sought for the murder that occurred days ago in Pristina.
Days ago, Dorde Radomirović, convicted of murder, managed to escape from Mitrovica Prison.
Last year, Faton Hajrizi, after escaping from Smrekonica prison, arrived in Serbia, where he was killed by Serbian authorities after an intensive search, as he had previously participated in the murder of a policeman and injured another, in Loznica, Serbia. /Telegraph
