In a report published by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR), it was announced that 3,370 Albanians from the Presheva Valley were deleted from the voting lists in Serbia.
In the report "Passivation of the addresses of Albanians in the Preševo Valley as a discriminatory practice", which was presented weeks ago in Belgrade, YIHR said that the passivation was used as a political instrument to change the demographic and ethnic structure of southern Serbia.
While Marko Millosavjelvičit, who presented the report, said that the loss of addresses for Albanians in the Presheva Valley means the impossibility to get a job, get married, buy property, register a car and participate in elections.
"The paradox is that the victims of the abuse of the passivation process are often the owners or associates of the properties, apartments and steppes for which they pay taxes to the state. Although basic human rights are clearly threatened, Serbian officials have been denying this for years," said Millosavjelvic.
YIHR has emphasized that they collected the data through interviews with the residents, while 72 percent of the residents said that they were only notified verbally about the passivation of their addresses.
The head of the Complaints Department in the team of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Rejla Pantic, added that this shows that more attention should be paid to the extent of discrimination.
"Complaints about discrimination are dominated by complaints about discrimination based on nationality, which is 16 percent. Out of this, only one complaint is related to discrimination against Albanians", Pantiç said.
The initiative has called on the Serbian authorities to investigate the deactivation of addresses of Albanians and to publish the statistics of citizens according to ethnicity, which have been deactivated since 2012 in Bujanoc, Preševo and Medvegja.
Albanian political representatives in the Presheva Valley have expressed this issue several times.
While the complaint about the deletion from the voting list of Albanians in the Valley has been there before.
