Unrest in the north, the West moves to calm the conflict between Pristina and
Miroslav Lajīak and Albin Kurti

Western diplomats are again moving to convince Pristina and Belgrade to reduce tensions and implement in practice the requests of the European Union for the extension of the situation in the north of Kosovo.

After the visit to Belgrade and Pristina of the prime ministers of the Netherlands and Luxembourg, the EU mediator in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajīak, went to Pristina on Tuesday evening. The European mediator said that in Pristina "he found understanding to advance the demands of the European Union for the extension of the situation in the north", but that "discussions for concrete steps must still continue". The European Union has asked Kosovo to suspend police operations in the north, move mayors to alternative offices and announce early elections, while Belgrade to influence the Serbs for unconditional participation in the upcoming elections.

For not taking steps, official Prishtina is already facing EU punitive measures. Mediator Lajīak, after the meeting he held with Prime Minister Kurti, said that he cannot talk about additional punitive measures for Kosovo. But he emphasized that such measures are also ready for Serbia in the event that it does not take actions towards the escalation of the situation.

Measures against Serbia?

"I cannot comment on the measures as they do not fall under my responsibility. But the European Union is not at all happy to be in this position to impose these measures. The EU has made it clear that it has sanctions ready for Serbia as well which will be decided if the member states assess that it is not respecting the EU's requirements", said Lajīak. According to him, the visit to Pristina was aimed at reaching the point "where these measures are removed and we return to the previous state".

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, for his part, continues, as he has said, not to be left behind in the European Union. But the EU's punitive measures imposed on the state of Kosovo are unfair and make the dialogue asymmetrical. In an announcement from Prime Minister Kurti's office, it is said that "Prime Minister Kurti expressed his dedication and commitment to expansion and normalization", while it is emphasized that "Kosovo police only enforces the law and takes care of public safety and that its members located in the buildings Municipal authorities have not undertaken operations in the vicinity of those buildings".

The European envoy in Pristina also met the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani. The latter emphasized that "Kosovo's institutions are committed to overcoming the current challenges together with international partners and that Kosovo has demonstrated its willingness to expand, offering the organization of new elections in the north of the country, in accordance with the legal framework of Kosovo".

Diplomacy intensified

"You understand the meaning of the tensions, let's not forget that the First World War started here and before Ukraine, the last war we had on the continent was here, so we must avoid any new possible crisis that could end with suffering of the civilian population", pointed out the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel./DW
