Very few Albanians are exercising their right to vote today, when early parliamentary elections are being held in Serbia. They may be left without a representative in the Parliament of Serbia, while their political representatives are competing in two electoral lists.
The acting mayor of Presheva, Shqiprim Arifi, expressed himself very pessimistically. He blames the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, for the division of the Albanians there. Meanwhile, his opponent who was a deputy, Shaip Kamberi, hopes that the number of Albanians who vote will increase and he can win another mandate. "We don't have time to mourn," he says.
Extraordinary parliamentary elections are being held today in Serbia, but there are not many Albanians who are using the right to vote. Their representatives are running divided into two electoral lists, which makes it more difficult for them to be represented in the Parliament of Serbia.
While they heard the calls of the presidents from Kosovo and Albania to vote en masse, but they did not answer them, today they also heard the statements of Shqip Kamber and Shqiprim Arifi, the two main opponents in the Albanian political scene in the Valley who did not join the race.
The acting mayor of Presheva, Shqiprim Arifi, voted in the village of Tërnave, from where he expressed pessimism that Albanians will be able to win a parliamentary mandate in the Serbian Parliament.
"It is a tragedy that we see today, we have now spent more than three hours since the polling stations opened and what I warned about earlier, that the Albanians have already boycotted the elections in 2022, because we were divided. It seems that this year, once again, it seems that they are boycotting our division, which we have with two lists in the elections. It's a disaster. As you can see, there is no gathering, it is the same in the other 38 polling stations", said Arifi from the "Albanian Democratic Alternative - United Valley" list.
For this boycott, Arifi said that the Albanian leadership should take the bill. He accuses the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, of supporting Kamberi in the Valley, dividing the Albanians there.
Shaip Kamberi, who leads the list "The political battle of Albanians continues", had a different disposition. He was the only Albanian deputy in the Parliament of Serbia in the last legislative term.
Kamberi voted in the village of Tërnoc te Madh in Bujanoci, from where he expressed optimism that during the day the number of Albanians who will vote will increase and that they will manage to cross the "threshold necessary to have a mandate".
"I believe that in the last days of the campaign, there has been a greater intensification on the ground, our meetings with people, where we explained the importance of going out and participating in the parliamentary elections. We have information that our citizens who work in Kosovo are today arriving in the Presheva Valley to cast their vote, because we must have a representation and that representation is expressed through a free vote. Citizens have the opportunity to choose today. I believe that they will massively respond to the invitation for elections", declared Kamberi.
In spite of Arif, Kamberi said that Kosovo and Albania "cannot be to blame" that the Albanians there have not been unified in a common list. Now, he says, "we don't have time to mourn".
By lunchtime, few Albanians voted. The chairman of the Municipal Electoral Commission of Presheva, Alban Mehmeti, said that until 12:00, "2100 people, or 4.8 percent of the citizens, have voted", out of 43 thousand 500 who have the right to vote.
In Bujanoc, 8.6 percent of citizens voted until 12:00, said the chairman of the Municipal Electoral Commission there, Fejzi Beqiri. 42,786 citizens have the right to vote.
