Although Matthew McConaughey was very close to landing the role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron's legendary film "Titanic," his refusal to shed his Texas accent during the audition reportedly cost him the opportunity. The role ultimately went to Leonardo DiCaprio, earning him worldwide recognition. In "The Bigger Picture," by the film's producer Jon Landau, who died in 2024 of cancer and was a close collaborator of Cameron's for many years, McConaughey emerges as a leading candidate for the male lead.
According to an excerpt published in Matthew Belloni's What I'm Hearing newsletter on August 5, the Texas actor auditioned alongside Kate Winslet, who was "struck by Matthew, his presence and charm." "Matthew did the scene with a Texan accent," says Landau.
Cameron, he recalls, said, “Very well. Now let’s try it another way.” But McConaughey didn’t want to follow suit. According to Landau, he replied, “No. It was pretty good. Thank you.” The producer comments elsewhere: “Let’s just say that was the end of McConaughey.”
McConaughey addressed the incident in 2021, speaking on the podcast Literally! with Rob Lowe. “I went and read with Kate Winslet, and it wasn’t just an audition — they filmed it, so it was already in the screen test phase,” he said. “When we left, it was one of those moments where they follow you and say, ‘That went really well.’
The Oscar-winning actor added: "I really believed it would happen. It didn't." Although rumors for years suggested he had turned down the role, he clarified: "I asked Cameron about it, because the rumors that were going around were that I was offered the role and I turned it down. That's not true. I was never offered the role."
Although McConaughey's career grew significantly in the years that followed, he admitted he was bitter about not being in the film, which earned more than $1.5 billion at the global box office and a whopping 11 Oscars.
