Hikers in California discovered human remains in the area where actor Julian Sands disappeared more than five months ago. Officials have not identified the victim and it is not known if it is the actor.
The remains were sent to the medical examiner for confirmation, which is expected to be completed next week. The 65-year-old actor was reported missing on January 13 when he failed to return from a hiking trip in the San Gabriel Mountains to Mount Baldy, which is located 45 miles east of Los Angeles.
The search, which consisted of 80 volunteers and officials, resumed on June 17, after a temporary suspension. Police have carried out eight ground and air raids since Sands' disappearance.
"Despite the recent warmer weather, parts of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. "Many areas include steep terrain and valleys that still have over 10 feet of ice and snow," the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said last week.
Sands' family spoke for the first time since his disappearance, expressing gratitude for the ongoing search and rescue efforts. "We are deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who worked tirelessly to find Julia," the statement said.
Mount Baldy is considered one of the most dangerous peaks to climb in California. Six people died as authorities conducted more than 100 searches for adventurers and veteran climbers drawn from the challenge of the 10,000-foot mountain, according to the Los Angeles Times.
In January, officials found climber Jin Chung, 75, who was lost on Mount Baldy and was treated for a leg injury and other weather-related injuries. Before his disappearance, a mother of four children was killed, falling from a great height.
