An apartment in Canada was found covered in a thick layer of ice after tenants turned off the heating during the holidays, causing pipes to burst due to the extreme cold.
Jacques Nolt, the owner of a series of apartments in Quebec, Canada, was faced with an unusual situation when he entered one of his apartments in early January.
The walls, ceiling, furniture and electrical appliances were covered in thick ice, while a layer of ice about 30 centimeters high had formed on the floor.
According to the owner, the damage was caused when the tenants turned off the heating completely before going on vacation, in order to reduce electricity costs.
Extremely low temperatures caused pipes to burst, causing water to freeze and cover the entire apartment.
Speaking to local media, Jacques Nolt explained how precision leads many people to make risky decisions: "Everything is expensive, the cost of living is constantly increasing. People want to save money, but turning off the heating completely is not a solution," he said.
As he pointed out, water has penetrated the walls and ceilings, which creates a serious hazard. The apartment will be completely dismantled, dried out and rebuilt, to the extent covered by the insurance company.
The tenants were officially evicted from the apartment on January 5, but it remains unknown whether the landlord will take legal action to cover part of the cost of repairs.
