Flight attendants are trained for every conceivable scenario, from simple turbulence to serious medical emergencies. But there's one situation that everyone avoids, even after years of experience: the death of a passenger during a flight, thousands of feet above the ground.
The question is simple and terrifying at the same time. What happens when someone dies at 40,000 feet? How does the crew react and what is the protocol? The debate has been reignited for good, following the recent incident in which a family in Britain carried a dead grandmother on a flight, claiming she was... asleep.
Former flight attendant Jay Robert describes the possibility of death in flight as one of the most stressful scenarios for cabin crew. He says it is often preceded by a serious medical incident, which in itself creates tension and anxiety.
When an incident results in a casualty, the experience can be traumatic for everyone, especially when it involves a young person. According to him, the chances of a crew encountering such an event increase on long flights and long-haul aircraft.
The reason is simple: More passengers, fewer opportunities for immediate diversion, and many hours of standing still, which can seriously affect the health of some travelers.
Airlines have specific procedures in place for such cases, in accordance with international aviation regulations. While protocol varies from company to company, the basic steps are common.
The crew provides first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, uses a defibrillator if necessary and immediately informs the pilots. At the same time, advice is sought from doctors through specialized telemedicine services.
The captain, in collaboration with the company's operations center, decides whether the plane will continue to its final destination or divert. But, unfortunately, not everyone can escape.
