From fierce competitors to lifelong partners, skating fans witnessed a romantic moment during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Spanish-British figure skater Olivia Smart announced her engagement to her former rival Jean-Luc Baker on Valentine's Day. They had competed against each other at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where Smart finished 8th and Baker 11th in the free skate.
Although Smart and her current partner, Tim Dieck, failed to medal in the figure skating event on February 11, finishing in 9th place, she had a much bigger personal achievement. Baker, who won bronze in the team event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, proposed to Smart on the anniversary of the day he declared his love for her during the competition in Beijing.
Baker confessed in a video shared by the Olympics: "We've been best friends for about 11 or 12 years. I couldn't live without knowing that she knew how I felt about her." He added that after their competition in Beijing, where they had the free dance, he realized it was time to express his feelings.
