Prince Harry's desperation to protect his wife and children has deepened his estrangement from his father, King Charles.
When the Duke of Sussex, 39, returned to Britain in May to celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of his proudest achievements, the Invictus Games, his father was absent from the ceremony. They did not meet and the reason, according to the staff, was the "busy schedule" of the king.
However, sources close to Harry speak to a deeper issue. Harry wanted to discuss his ongoing battle for security, which he has been fighting in court for more than four years and believes Charles has the power to reinstate him.
The family rift that first became public in 2020 when Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their royal roles has been marked by attacks and tensions. But for Harry, no single issue is a bigger sticking point than security, sources close to him tell PEOPLE.
Despite a meeting between father and son in February, following the king's cancer diagnosis, their communication has since deteriorated. Sources say that the monarch no longer accepts his son's calls or answers his letters.
"He becomes 'unavailable now,'" says a friend of Harry's. "His calls remain unanswered. He has tried to contact about the king's health, but even those calls remain unanswered."
