Seven contestants in the beauty contests held recently in Jakarta, for the selection of the girl who will represent Indonesia in the final stage to be declared "Miss Universe", have accused the organizers of sexual harassment.
According to the plaintiffs, the organizers of the national competitions asked the 30 finalists to undress for "physical examinations". Lawyer Melissa Angraeni told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the organizers insisted on the need to exclude the presence of "cellulite or tattoos" anywhere on the contestants' bodies.
The 30 finalists were put through the test in a room with more than 20 people present, including several men, according to the lawyer, who added that five girls were photographed during the test.
One of the plaintiffs said at a press conference that she was asked to pose obscenely, spreading her legs. "I felt like I was being watched, I was confused and very uncomfortable," she said. The Kompas TV network, which aired her statements, had edited the image to blur her facial features, while preserving her anonymity.
A police spokesman in Jakarta assured that the complaints will be investigated.
The director of the organizing authority of the Indonesian beauty pageant, Popi Kapela, posted on Instagram to thank everyone who shared "thoughts, feelings and ideas" about the beauty pageant after the revelation of the big scandal.
