Ludovico Clemente Garavani, known in the fashion world as Valentino, has died at the age of 93 at his home in Rome. The news was confirmed by the Valentino Garavani Foundation and Giancarlo Giammetti, co-founder of the brand and former partner of the renowned designer.
Public tributes will be held on 21 and 22 January, from 11:00 to 18:00, at PM23, Piazza Mignanelli 23, in Rome, a symbolic place of his creativity. The funeral ceremony will be held on Friday, 23 January, at 11:00, at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, in Piazza della Repubblica 8, Rome.
Valentino was born in Voghera in 1932 and began his career in Paris, where he trained in the ateliers of Jean Dèsses and Guy Laroche. In 1958, after returning to Italy, he opened a fashion laboratory on Via Condotti in Rome. The turning point in his career came in 1962 at the Palazzo Pitti, when his collections attracted international attention.
Together with Giancarlo Giammetti, he founded Maison Valentino, which quickly became one of the most important names in world fashion, dressing the biggest Hollywood stars and the international elite.
In 1998, Valentino and Giammetti sold the brand to the HdP group, which later, in 2002, transferred control to the Marzotto group. However, Valentino continued to artistically direct the fashion house until 2007. In 2012, the Valentino brand was acquired by the Qatar-based investment fund Mayhoola for Investments.
With the passing of Valentino, Italian fashion loses one of its most emblematic figures – a master of elegance who set new standards in international style.
