British girl suffers stroke, speaks with Thai accent after being mentioned

A British girl's birthday trip to Turkey ended with a very serious health problem, which left her with a strange consequence.

According to foreign media, Kathy Warren, from Basingstoke, Hampshire, went on holiday to Fethiye, Turkey, with friends, in September 2024 to celebrate her 28th birthday.

While on her way to her birthday dinner, she felt dizzy and was unable to walk.

She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with a stroke. Her only symptom was a headache, which she attributed to the heat.

However, that was only part of her adventure, because when she woke up, things got even more complicated. In addition to the fact that due to the stroke, her left side was paralyzed, she suddenly spoke with a Thai accent.

The young woman was diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare condition where a person's speech takes on an accent that is different from normal and that people may consider "foreign."

"I don't think my voice and my speech will ever be the same," Kathy said.

"I used to have a British accent, but when I woke up my accent was different. My mother is from Thailand, so she has a Thai accent. I would say the accent I have now sounds like hers, it's Thai, it's foreign," she said.

Doctors believe the sudden change could have been caused by both brain damage and the fact that her mother speaks with a Thai accent.

Kathy was hospitalized for a month in Turkey before doctors allowed her to fly to the UK, where her rehabilitation began.

She is halfway through recovery and has learned to walk again, completed speech therapy, but says her accent has not returned.
