Chanel fashion show transforms New York subway into art stage

The famous fashion house Chanel returned to New York with its annual "Métiers d'Art" show, the first under the direction of the house's artistic director, Matthieu Blazy, writes vogue.com.

The show was a cinematic experience that captivated the city, supported Blazy's powerful vision for the fashion house, and showcased the artistry of Chanel's staff.

The shows took place downtown, below 168 Bowery on the abandoned platform of the Bowery station, where Tom Ford staged his Spring 2020 show.

Guests were numerous, including brand ambassadors like A$AP Rocky and Margaret Qualley, Tilda Swinton, Kristen Stewart, Solange, G. Dragon, Jessie Buckley, Linda Evangelista, Dapper Dan, Charlotte Casiraghi, Rose Byrne, Riley Keough, Jon Bon Jovi and many more, boarded the C line as the subway continued to rumble.

Combining wonder with practical pomp, each garment offered a touch that delighted the senses through sound, sight, and touch.

"This is my stop, the Chanel stop," joked actress Jenny Slate, sitting in the front row in a wool jacket and khaki pants.

"I'm so happy to be here. I travel by metro quite often and every outfit and every interpretation of the woman I am was my fantasy: sometimes I'm a mother, sometimes I'm fantastic in an evening dress and I'm on the metro," Emily Ratajkowski emphasized about her first Chanel show.

"I feel inspired to go home and try to copy the looks I saw. The sheer raincoat with the cheetah with glitter underneath. I loved the patterns and the colors," she added.

Elegantly dressed Chanel shoppers, celebrities and the fashion world braved the pouring rain on Kenmare Street and the Bowery.

“The collection is very character-oriented,” Blazy says in the interview, citing as inspiration a 1970s journalist and a 1980s businesswoman who accompanied Gabrielle Chanel on a 1931 trip to America to create costumes for films, as well as contemporary characters, ranging from “children to students to world leaders.”
