Famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has been embroiled in a serious scandal, after two former female employees accused him of sexual assault, constant harassment and degrading behavior while they worked for him.
According to a three-year joint investigation by elDiario.es and Univision Noticias, the two women: a domestic worker and a physical therapist, allege that the abuses occurred in 2021, at Iglesias' residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.
The investigation includes testimony from 15 former employees, who worked for the 82-year-old singer from the late 1990s to 2023. According to media reports, the two women's accounts were consistent and supported by documentary evidence, including messages, photographs, medical reports and phone records.
One of the women, identified by the pseudonym Rebecca, claims that Iglesias would often call her to his room and touch her sexually without her consent.
"He used me almost every night. I felt like an object, like a slave," she told the media.
Meanwhile, the other woman, named Laura, has stated that the singer kissed her and touched her breasts without permission, both on the beach and in his luxury villa in Punta Cana.
Rebecca and Laura said Iglesias asked them intimate questions soon after they arrived, such as: “Do you like women?”, “Do you like threesomes?”, and “Have you had breast surgery?” They say he asked them to look at their breasts on several occasions and also touched them.
Both women speak of an environment of fear, control, and normalized abuse, while the investigation also reveals a suspicious recruitment process, where candidates were required to submit full-body and facial photographs.
According to elDiario.es, the two women have already filed an official complaint with the Audiencia Nacional, Spain's highest criminal court, accusing Iglesias of sexual assault and human trafficking.
Julio Iglesias and his lawyer did not respond to media requests for comment. However, a former supervisor named in the testimony denied the allegations, calling the singer "a great gentleman and very respectful of women."
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Madrid region, has also reacted in his defense, severely criticizing the publication of the accusations.
The issue is expected to bring other important developments in the coming days.
