A dramatic family clash has erupted in Taipei, Taiwan, after a 102-year-old millionaire, identified as Wang, was forcibly removed from hospital by his children, just weeks after secretly registering his marriage to his 68-year-old caretaker, Lai.
The incident occurred in Zhongshan District, when Wang was leaving a medical appointment in a wheelchair, which was being pushed by his new wife. At the entrance of the hospital, his three sons, daughters-in-law and some grandchildren were waiting for him, who intervened to take control of the wheelchair and remove the nurse, while the situation also became tense on the street.
According to the children's claims, they only discovered the marriage after being denied a meeting with their father a few days after the registration on January 5. They accuse Lai of isolating the elderly man from the family and taking advantage of his health condition for financial gain.
Wang is reported to have transferred seven plots of land and an insurance policy worth around £1.9m to his wife and children, with the total value of his estate estimated at between £16m and £18.7m. These moves have sparked a row and the case has gone to court.
Lai, for her part, denies any wrongdoing and has filed a complaint for coercion and public insult, as well as seeking a protection order against her husband's family. Civil registration authorities have stated that during the marriage procedure, Wang was able to answer clearly and met the legal criteria, as Taiwanese law does not set an age limit for persons with full legal capacity.
Now, the validity of the marriage and property transfers will be decided by the court, as the family conflict continues to spark public debate in Taiwan.
