An incredible event has shocked the small town of Tarquinia in Italy, where a 78-year-old man was brought back to life about 30 minutes after he was officially declared dead. According to Italian media, the man had suffered two cardiac arrests and, after fruitless efforts by doctors to keep him alive, was declared dead.
His body was placed on a stretcher to await the hearse, while family members, doctors and nurses were in shock. But suddenly, just before he was to leave for the morgue, the 78-year-old opened his eyes, began to move and in a weak voice asked: “Where are my children?” Shortly after, he was transported to the nearest hospital, where he is in stable condition and fully conscious.
The unusual case is suspected to be related to the so-called "Lazarus syndrome", a rare medical phenomenon where patients spontaneously return to life a few minutes after the end of resuscitation. To this day, this syndrome remains a mystery to science, but some doctors think it may be caused by air trapped in the chest during CPR, or the delayed effects of drugs.
The incident is being handled with caution by Italian health authorities, while the doctors involved are under investigation for the protocols followed. Is this one of those stories where medicine bows down in the face of a miracle, or a fatal error?
