3 years after Maradona's death, the unpaid debts of the Argentinian legend

Three years after the death of Diego Maradona, the judges of the Supreme Court have accepted the appeal of the heirs against the alleged evasion of taxes, which is about 37 million euros.

The dispute is related to the fees paid by Napoli to the Argentinian champion in the second half of the 1980s: in payments of image rights to foreign accounts (in Liechtenstein) from two foreign companies that amounted to tax evasion in 40 billion lira at the time, which then increased over the years to 37 million euros, more than half of which was in late payment interest.

But now the tax section of the Supreme Court has accepted the appeal discussed by the lawyer Masimo Garzilli, who represents Diego Armando Maradona with the lawyer Angelo Pisani, sending everything to the Tax Commission of Campania, which will have to express its opinion again for this matter.

In the event of a negative final judgment, any outstanding debt would fall on the shoulders of the heirs. Beginning in the early 1990s, the affair was marked by a series of appeals and sequestrations. At one point, Maradona's lawyers pleaded self-defense, asking that the amnesty that Napoli had benefited from in the same case be extended to him.

Provincial and regional tax commissions rejected the appeals. Therefore, the case went to the Supreme Court. The Court of Cassation had confirmed that the former Argentine footballer could have benefited from the amnesty and that the merit judges should have assessed his tax position only for any remaining debt to the tax agency.
