The FIFA Council held a meeting on Tuesday in Vancouver, Canada, where the requests of the 48 federations that will participate in the 2026 World Cup were reviewed. According to the decisions taken, the highest institution in world football has approved a significant increase in the prize fund for participating teams and especially for the teams that rank in the first places.

Increase in total funding and support for delegations

The official statement said the total prize fund amounts to $871 million, about 15% more than the initial estimate. Additional funds have also been provided for delegations based in the United States, Canada and Mexico to cover higher organizational and logistical costs.

Rewards by ranking

Although the differences remain significant, FIFA has set rewards for each stage of the ranking:

World Champion: $50 million (€42.6 million)

Runner-up: $33 million (€28.1 million)

Third place: $29 million (€24.7 million)

Fourth place: $27 million (€23 million)

Places 5–8: $19 million (€16.2 million)

Places 9–16: $15 million (€12.8 million)

Countries 17–32: $11 million (€9.4 million)

Places 33–48: $9 million (€7.7 million)

Tickets and revenue

According to data, revenue from reserved tickets is expected to reach around $16 million, reflecting the high interest in this expanded edition of the tournament.

Tournament organization

The 2026 World Cup will kick off on June 11 and will be held in three countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. This will be the first edition with 48 participating teams.

Albania and Kosovo out of the tournament

Albania and Kosovo attempted to secure a historic spot in this World Cup, but were eliminated in the play-off stage, remaining out of the competition.
