Abramovich in trouble, British government sues former Chelsea president; cause

The UK government has formally launched legal proceedings against Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich over his failure to release £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea football club, funds that were meant to help victims of the conflict in Ukraine.

According to an official statement from Downing Street, Abramovich has not yet authorized the transfer of the amount, despite the previously set 90-day deadline having passed. British authorities state that he was given a final opportunity to act, but to no avail.

The government has confirmed that it will take the matter to court to enforce the commitments made in 2022, when the sale of the London club was finalized.

Dispute over amount and destination

The issue is not just about the delay, but also about how the funds are distributed. British authorities are demanding that the entire £2.5 billion be used to help areas affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On the other hand, Abramovich's legal representatives propose that only £987 million be distributed, as the rest, according to them, should be used to repay domestic loans.

This stance has become even more complicated following the Premier League's recent sanctions against Chelsea for financial irregularities that occurred during Abramovich's ownership of the club.
