Real Madrid eliminated Atletico Madrid from the Champions League after a penalty shootout, which was significantly affected by a controversial decision: Julian Alvarez's goal was disallowed after it was ruled that he had touched the ball with both feet during the kick.
This decision caused great controversy, and on Friday at noon UEFA released an official statement on the case:
UEFA statement:
"A tlético de Madrid contacted UEFA to clarify the incident that led to the cancellation of the penalty taken by Julian Alvarez at the end of yesterday's UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Although it was a minimal touch, the player contacted the ball with his supporting foot before taking the shot, as shown in the attached video.
According to the current rules of the game (Rule 14.1), the VAR was obliged to notify the referee to disallow the goal.
"UEFA will discuss with FIFA and IFAB whether this rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional ."
What happened?
Julian Alvarez's shot was Atletico Madrid's second in the penalty shootout and, if it had been awarded, would have tied the score at 2-2.
However, after VAR intervention and referee Shimon Marshiniak's decision, the goal was disallowed, leaving the score at 2-1 in favor of Real Madrid.
Jude Bellingham then converted the penalty for 'Los Blancos', securing an advantage that ultimately sealed Atletico Madrid's elimination.
The decision has sparked huge controversy, with many fans and analysts considering it a "steal", while others defend the referees' application of the rules.
