Two rising stars who grew up and played in Switzerland, Leon Avdullahu and Albian Hajdari, chose a career in the Bundesliga and with the Kosovo national team this summer. "Blick" meets the two friends in Hoffenheim for a joint interview.
In the Super League last season, Leon Avdullahu (21) and Albian Hajdari (22) were still competing against each other in the title race – both as undisputed key players for their clubs. In the summer, the two rising stars transferred to the same Bundesliga club. After a 3-1 win against Leipzig, in which Hajdari scored his first Bundesliga goal to make it 1-1, Hoffenheim are in fifth place.
Both turned their backs not only on the Swiss Super League but also on the Swiss Football Association (SFV), opting instead for a change of national team. Now playing for Kosovo, the two Swiss players are making an entire nation dream of the World Cup. Ahead of the crucial international break, they meet with a view of Hoffenheim's state-of-the-art campus.
Leon Avdullahu and Albian Hajdari, your paths crossed before at Hoffenheim. How long have you known each other?
Avdullahu: We have known each other for years from the youth academy of FC Basel, but we were in different age groups. A friendship developed when we did our transfer test together at Novartis and were in the same class.
Hajdari: And we played together once or twice in the FC Basel U18 team before I was allowed to join the first team.
Who was the best student?
Hajdari : Definitely Leon (laughs). However, I have a good excuse: since I was already with the professionals, I trained in the morning and practically missed every school lesson.
Avdullahu : I was happy that Albi wasn't at school with me and wasn't distracting me (laughs).
Did you ever think back then that one day you would play together in the Bundesliga?
Avdullahu: No, never.
Hajdari: The first time I dreamed about it was this spring. When I heard that Leon was moving to Hoffenheim, I said to our agent Sascha Fischer: “I want to go there too!”
And it worked, but only late in the transfer window, as Leon Avdullahu managed to complete all of his pre-season training at Hoffenheim.
Avdullahu : We were in regular contact. I knew something was going to happen with Albin, but for a long time I didn't know exactly where he was going. When the club finally informed me, I was very happy.
Avdullahu: The good thing is that we can talk intensely about football. But we can also quickly break away and talk about something else. That's important.
Hajdari: We have such a close relationship, we can tell each other everything. We celebrate together, we criticize each other, and we improve each other.
Sixth place after nine games, a successful start to the season, right?
Avdullahu: Absolutely! Except for the home match against Cologne.
Hajdari: Yes, we had many chances against Cologne. We should have gotten at least one point.
What was it like when you suddenly found yourself on the field against the Bayern Munich team and their superstars?
Hajdari: The week before the match is special. We joked. But before and during the match, you are so focused that you don't care who your opponent is. Only after the match did I think to myself: "Wow, today I had to play against Harry Kane, and I played well."
Avdullahu: For me, it doesn't matter at all who we play against. But it's certainly a good experience to compete against opponents of this caliber. We played well, but we were punished for small mistakes. This is valuable for development.
Where do you see your future, what goals do you still want to achieve together?
Hajdari: So, where do I see myself in five years, for example?
Avdullahu: In Lugano! (laughs)
Hajdari: Wherever Leon goes, I will go too. No, first I want to establish myself in the Bundesliga and consistently give good performances. We have clear and internal objectives here at Hoffenheim. Everything else will fall into place.
Avdullahu: I don't think it will be too far away. But I would definitely like to win the Champions League one day.
You both made a name for yourself not only at your clubs, but also for Kosovo in the World Cup qualifiers. Leon Avdullahu, you made your debut against Switzerland at your former home ground, Joggeli. What was that like for you?
Avdullahu: It was a lot of pressure, but in a positive way. With the final score 0-4, I still want to forget the game as soon as possible. I had imagined it would be completely different. Although, looking back, the way we lost could have been good for us.
And you, Albian Hajdari, were sitting in the stands thinking: Is this Kosovo defense so bad that I'm guaranteed a starting spot?
Hajdari: I wanted to see my two teams playing in the stadium and cheer for Leon on his debut. Only then did I start thinking about it. I knew that the national team would not change the team much in the future in this form, and I saw more opportunities with Kosovo.
